The meetings of the Zoning Board of Adjustment are open to the public, except such executive sessions authorized pursuant to state law.

Any individual giving sworn testimony at a public hearing held during a remote public meeting shall appear by video in addition to audio, and this is pursuant to Rule 5:39-1.7 of the Requirements for Virtual Meetings.

Members are appointed by the Mayor with advice and consent of the council per Ordinance #785. The board consists of 7 members with 2 alternates.
The Zoning Board of Adjustment is empowered by the State Law to hear and decide appeals where it is alleged by the appellant that there is an error in any order, requirement, decision or refusal made by administrative officer based on or made in the enforcement of the local zoning ordinance. The Board may also hear and decide request for interpretation of zoning map or ordinance.
The Zoning Board of Adjustment may grant a variance from the strict application of the zoning regulations of the Borough of Ramsey. No variance or other relief may be granted by the Board unless such variance or other relief can be granted without substantial detriment to the public good and will not substantially impair the intent and purpose of the zone plan and zoning ordinance of the Borough of Ramsey.
Business Related Responsibilities
The Zoning Board of Adjustment hears variance applications for a business use that is not permitted in a zone. In addition, the Board of Adjustment can grant variances for setbacks, parking and lot size.
Applications are first reviewed by the Board Engineer. Once the application is deemed complete, a date for a public hearing is scheduled.
