Columbia Bank donated the River Birch tree that was planted for Arbor Day in Finch Park. The tree was dedicated in the memory of Jim Rogers. He was the past president of the Ramsey Board of Health and longest BOH member in Bergen County’s history.

Words from the Board of Health & The Rodgers Family

On the behalf of all of the Rogers and related family members, we can’t thank you all enough for the effort all of you and the Borough of Ramsey has made not only for the remembrance of the Finch family, but in honoring my father. Ramsey continues to amaze me with the thoughtfulness and respect that’s shown to members of the Borough’s community. This includes former and as well as present members. I’m sure I speak for all my family in that we will forever remember this.   - Matt Rogers

“I followed Jim Rogers as president of the board of health.  It was a heavy lift. Jim was a very capable and wise leader, but it was his personal qualities that made him special.  He was unfailingly genial, respectful, patient, thoughtful, kind, focused, good humored, and also listened well   He was supportive of new and often difficult to implement health-enhancing initiatives—ranging   from prohibiting smoking in Ramsey restaurants (the first in Bergen County, maybe NJ? to do so) to a successful community-wide weight loss effort (about 1,000 pounds in total).  It wasn’t his style to micromanage, but to encourage and trust. Jim was also generous.   Knowing we shared a strong interest in gardening, he once gave me one of his precious Christmas cactuses.  Another time he delivered to my house two freshly dug varieties of ferns.  I quickly gave them a new home and the ferns have thrived.  Right now, their green fronds are pushing up from their winter dormancy—serving as a sweet and enduring remembrance of Jim. Ramsey was fortunate to have him.” - Joan Waring

“Jim was clearly an example of a person who wanted to give back to his community, serving as a devoted Ramsey Board of Health member and President for over 5 decades.  Jim also seemed to always look forward to our BOH meetings with his good-humored cheerfulness and calm demeanor.  Jim and I had a special connection since he was a chemist graduating from St John’s University and myself pharmacist who grew up on Long Island.   I always enjoyed listening to his wisdom and knowledge of Ramsey.” - Jeff Nemeth

“The Ramsey BOH is proud to honor the life of Jim Rogers and his years of service to the community. He served on the BOH for decades, many of them as president.  This tree serves as a reminder of his dedication, a sign of our appreciation and symbolizes the deep roots

He and his family will always have here in Ramsey.”  - Tami Azouri
